Overview:
During the grey of dawn, the American VI Corps began landing at Anzio and Nettuna on the Italian boot. Very few capable German combat units were available to conduct an effective counter-attack against the beachhead. The German 14th Army Command managed to quickly piece together units and formed a reasonably stable containment ring around the beachhead. The 14th Army's plan was for the Hermann Goring Fallschirm-Panzer-Division, supported by Tiger tanks and Elefant tank destroyers to strike south from Isola Bella towards La Ferriere. The terrain in the area of the former Pontino marshes was not well suited for an attack by heavy tracked vehicles. Due to the continuous rainfall and flooding of the dams, only the paved roads were trafficable. Kampfgrupper Stein with a pair of Elefants leading, advanced along the Cisterna-Nettuno road, came under fire south of the town of Isola Bella.Attacker: German (Hermann Göring Parachute Panzer Division, sPzJg. | 2026-02-08 | (A) Robert Wiebe | vs | American | American win (VASL Log) | 5 hrs | I set up the three 57L south of the stream and the 3 x Baz 44 on the right side in case the German tried to push the more open ground (risking bog) or more straight road routes. German went down the centre pretty much however and the centre was dealt with rather quickly once their 838s came on board. I rolled the extra Tiger for the Germans which helped deal with the nest of Americans in the centre area and the Germans were doing fine until the 155 landed on Turn 6, right on the elevated road (13M5), catching one Elephant, a 548 and the 9-1, eventually eliminating them with the FFE:2. Germans came up 2 VP short, when the last Elephant was taken out by a hurried shot from the remaining 57L (broken crew, recovered the Gun, spin and fired (rolled snakes on the TK)) as it was about to drive off the board. Great scenario of fire and movement, with a couple of set piece battles in the midst. The Aerial Observer was less than effective, failing several radio contacts and then drawing a red chit on its second Access attempt, but by then the last 57L had taken out the remaining Elephant and denied the Germans the VP required.
