Overview:
There were believed to one thousand Japanese defending the Duropa Plantation and two Buna airstrips, but the Australians now had a trump card: tanks. After sunset on the 17th, the tanks moved forward under the cover of a mortar barrage that hid their approach to ready themselves for an attack on the next day. The Australian 18th Brigade, a veteran of Tobruk and Milne Bay, would provide the infantry support. Being veterans, some soldiers did a thorough night reconnaissance of the Japanese positions before the attack scheduled for the next day. At 0650, every gun and mortar available shelled the plantation. Ten minutes later the barrage ceased, and the tanks and infantry moved off.Attacker: Australian (Elements 2/6th Armoured Regt. & 18th Brigade)
