Overview:

The heights around Gemmano provided a vista of good artillery spotting that stretched towards the Adriatic Sea. Situated strategically between the Conca River and Montefiore, the village was to be the target of four Allied attacks, the first of which was laid in on 8 September. The positions there were defended by the 100th Mountain Regiment, a fact that was known to Allied intelligence. What was not known was that the unit’s commander, Oberst Ernst, was to show his mettle, leading his men to a defensive effort considered staunch even by Gothic Line standards.
Attacker: British (Elements of B, C and D Companies, Queen's Own Royal Regiment, 169th Infantry Brigade, 56th Infantry Division + Reinforcing elements of C Squadron, 8th R.T.R.)
Defender: German (Elements of 100th Regiment, 5th Mountain Division)
