Overview:
The 80th Brigade of the 20th Indian Division had formed the rear-guard as they withdrew through the Hagu Hills. The division fought its way back toward India. When the reached Shenam Pass, there was to be “no further withdrawal countenanced”. With India threatened and nowhere else to run, the 80th Brigade’s men began to realize that there was no alternative but to hold. Cut off and besieged, the brigade began to dig-in on the hilltops. Intense, desperate and repeated efforts were made to dislodge the defenders. Scraggy was the name given to one of the hill tops that faced the most sustained assaults.Attacker: Japanese (Elements of 33rd Japanese Division)
