Overview:

As the Americans tightened their grip on the German Army trapped in the Ruhr Pocket, the Germans were looking to break out. The American 9th Infantry Division’s Regimental Combat Teams were advancing northwestwards through the steep wooded valleys of the Sauerland, with the 47th RCT moving towards the important road net center at Oberkirchen. The 47th RCT had advanced as far as the small village of Vorwald, where they halted. They were caught by surprise when the Germans suddenly mounted a strong counterattack with elements of the Panzer Lehr Division supported by portions of two other divisions.
