Overview:
The opening phases of Operation Brabarossa met with spectacular gains. As the surprised Soviet troops were unable to offer an organized resistance. After 3 weeks of fighting, the Germans had reached the Dvina, and then the Dneiper. The Soviet 19th Army was transferred by rail but arrived in Vitebsk just as the Soviet resistance was collapsing under German attacks. In a bold stroke, the Germans pressed forward and made for Smolensk, capturing Soviet units gathered at train stations awaiting transport along the way. Only a few Soviet units were able to mount anything like an effective resistance. . .Attacker: German (58.Pionier Bataillon & 25.Panzerregiment)
