Since the 7th of December, the American 36th (Texas) Division had been attempting to remove the German strongpoint of San Pietro. The “T-Patchers” and their supporting elements had made two previous attempts against San Pietro, but they had no success in the face of tough resistance. The Germans, in terrain well-suited to the defense, were able to bring down a murderous fire on any attempt to break into the town. After noon on December 15th, the 143rd Infantry Regiment, with the support of Company A of the 753rd Tank Battalion, renewed the attack. After crossing what had been christened “Death Valley”, the Texans rushed across the ceppagna road, and approached the southern edge of the village.

Kåre launched the Americans on the German right and was very lucky: the first hit was a 1,1 on my lone MG squad that had to slow him down in that sector and he KIA'd it, so he just moved everyone forward. On my turn I moved the defenders to face the axis of attack and while moving my StuG he tried a lucky shot with a Sherman and got a 1,1 and burned it. Then I moved my good stack with the MG and the good leader to cover the position from behind and a second Sherman attacked it... you guess it, rolling 1,1 and KIA'd them. I conceded at that point as I had nothing left to defend that position.

Great round; my early US DRs were tough to beat; we made a mistake re. doubles on a 1-sniper - should have rolled a new Sniper check for the 2nd unit.

A fairly small scenario with a little bit of armor on each side. As the Germans, I placed my AT gun in 41AA9 to cover my left flank and the on-board StuG in 41T5. Most of my infantry set up in the middle of the board to be able to respond to either flank as needed. Jeff came on in strength on my left and I managed to take out an M4 on Turn 1 with my AT gun. The Germans shifted their forces to meet the attack in the bottom of Turn 1, but the Americans were able to swing back around and punch a hole in the middle of the German defense. By the start of Turn 4, things seemed to stabilize for the Germans, as they had some decent units (HMG, some leaders and good squads) in the fortified buildings north of the victory road and both StuG's still intact and in decent firing positions, with another M4 burning due to a StuG shot. However, superior American firepower broke the Germans in both 41Y5 (fortified) and W5 (not fortified) buildings and the gap allowed some Americans to get across the street and get a foothold in the VC area. Both StuG's were destroyed by frontal shots from the M4 75s (needing a 7 and a 6 TK and getting them both on Turn 4), and when three squads holed up in the fortified building 41DD4 took a CH from an M4 on an 8(+4) TH, killing one on the 24(-4) and breaking the other two on the 12(0) effects roll on Turn 5, it was time for the Germans to throw in the towel. A decent, small scenario but both Jeff and I thought it was pretty hard for the Germans to stand up to American firepower.

Scott tried to throw me off rhythm by taking a west coast business trip and making me play (willingly) at ungodly hours. Unfortunately for him this tactique didn't work. My goal from the beginning (though I don't even think I quite realized it myself) was to obliterate the German force in its entirety. As such I didn't even worry too much about losing CVPs, risking the key tanks right off the bat on a swift advance. In retrospect I may not have been quite so bold as tank-killing power for me was at a premium later in the game. I went so far as to begin the process of pushing his gun off the hill onto the road in an attempt to threaten his tanks (or gain extra CVP). Ultimately my desperate attempt to fix a broken MA paid off and this tank was able to knock out one of his and theoretically even the tide though, as Scott said, my other tank got lucky and knocked out the other the same turn. This scenario felt very Schwerpunktian, though had the boys from FL written it I think they would've given the Americans 1-2 less turns. Even with the brutal terrain to traverse it felt like I had more than ample time to accomplish my objective. No less than two American berserkers were generated in the heat of battle. Overall this was a fun scenario, but I do think it seems rough on the Germans.

Great game that went down to the last turn when Simon rushed his tanks into the VC area and took out my ATG crew in CC to prevent them shooting!

Great long game at the Winter Offensive with Damon. We always have close matches and this one didn't disappoint.
