Overview:

The Paris uprising started on 19 August 1944. Like Warsaw, Hitler immediately ordered the city to be destroyed. The battle quickly developed into a draw. The Forces Francaises de I'Intérieur (FFI) partisans had captured many municipal buildings and several important cultural landmarks. However, the German garrison was secure in a series of strong points around the city and could mount attacks with mobile battlegroups. On the morning of 23 August, a German battlegroup made an attack on the Grand Palais, which was occupied by the FFI partisans.
