Overview:

Badly mauled, the 363rd Volksgrenadier Division limped eastward, away from the Roer, where the 9th Panzer Division reinforced it. Lt. General August Dettling's volksgrenadiers were defending a line of strongpoints covering newly laid minefields along the road to Steinstrass with engineers and anti-aircraft units, and though reinforced, they would be hard-pressed to hold back the Americans. The 3rd Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division spearheaded the main attack which was funneled down a road across flat, open ground heavily forested on both sides.
