Overview:
As Patton’s advance towards Metz slowed, the US 4th Armored Division pulled back towards the Arracourt Hills in order to stabilize its defense line and prepare a firm basis for continuing the drive on Metz. Unusually heavy rains fell in that part of France in the last days of September. The surrounding farmland became a soggy morass that mired the armor of both German and American forces if they left the stability of the many paved roads in the region. For the Germans, the low hanging clouds eliminated Allied airpower.
