2023-06-14(D) Ron Garcia vs Darryl M. Russian winI wanted to play this scenario since I first saw it in The General 40ish years ago. So much so, that I even ordered the board for Devil's Den from Avalon Hill even though I already had that game as well (still unpunched and unplayed, BTW). Fast forward to the present and - disappointment.

There are two major problems with the scenario. First, the opposing forces start SO far apart that it took almost 10 turns for the Russians to get to "Little Round Top"; the Germans around five. Second, other than the number and type of squads, everything is random. That sounds cool on paper, but in reality, one side or the other can dominate based on how their leaders/support weapons/AFV's are rolled.

As it was, playing as the Germans, I received mostly LMG's and a few other odd assortment of weapons. My friend ended up with one 82mm MTR and it dominated the playing field since I had no weapons with enough range to do anything about it. This forced me do a reverse slope defense (after my guys took forever to get to the hill). Just to emphasize my second point, had I rolled a few better MG's and he not gotten that MTR, I would have decimated any units trying to traverse the open ground, or forced the Russians to stick to the woods which would have even taken longer for him to get to the base of the hill.

Once the Russians were in position, they assaulted my forces with everything they had. I didn't roll bad, but my friend blew off every MC no matter how severe it was like it was nothing. Then his return fire, even lowly 4 +1 shots, were effective. A successful Human Wave and more incredible MC's had my men reeling. After another snake eyes on another Russian 3MC, I had seen enough and called it. Bummer of way to end a scenario I waited forever to play.
