Overview:

Lead elements of the 507th PIR crossed the river Rhine at around 0950 and made the first combat jump in the history of the 17th Airborne Division. Colonel Edson Raff gathered his staff and available men after landing. It took some time before he realized they had landed 3 km northwest of their assigned drop zone. Without delay, he personally organized his troops and moved out toward their original target, Castle Diersfordt, which would be the designated command post for the 507th. On the way there, Raff’s formation suddenly ran into a German artillery position. The heavy guns were shelling the Allied bridgehead on the riverbanks and were a serious threat to the British troops there. Without hesitation, Raff ordered his men at attack the artillery position, which was protected by anti-aircraft guns – among them and 88 – MG nests, and various fortifications.

2022-06-09(A) Paolo Cariolato vs Giasone De Boni Draw
2022-04-23(D) Shane Pask vs Neil Macpherson American winANZACON. Forgot that Yanks could gain points by exiting the north edge. Defence of the guns went well but the Yanks did an end run on the other side and managed to get enough points off. Still, it was a close game and deployment of my wire and mines to cover the east flank may have given me a win.
2022-04-01(D) Rob MacGinley vs James Short German winThe American slowly moved forward to hit a series of traps with mines and hidden guns making them run out of time for their objectives of destroying the guns
2021-11-19(D) Asad Rustum vs Stefan Fiedler American winSupporting Fire
2021-07-12(D) Grant Linneberg vs Bruno Javanabal German winClose game. I was helped as a mild breeze blew up in the faces of the Americans trying to exit. That meant they couldn't lay down smoke upwind. He did a boardedge creep meaning my 88 was never even revealed. One of my ART pieces did stop one of his units cold and leave 8 resid which also slowed him down. The VP for not firing the guns was key as I didn't get a lot of CVP. I was surprised he didn't go after my guns instead of trying to sneak by them. He did kill the crew of one, but never went after the other. I guess he thought he'd beat me on points with a decent amount exiting. My HMG took care of that on the last half turn, stopping his 10-2 and 2 squads.
2020-11-27(A) Richard Jenulis vs Rob Wirthlin German winStrange game. The final score was 7 VP for the Americans [2 EVP, 2 VP for prisoners, & 3 VP from casualty reduction]. The Germans earned 19 VP [5 from firing the guns, 5 CVP, & 9 from casualty reductions]. There seemed to be a lot of 12's rolled in this game, including the 88.
2020-06-17(A) David Ramsey vs Dave Mareske German winGreat game despite it not even being close to a contest! The German HMG let nothing get past it and the US were stuck in a world where they couldn't move and couldn't get close enough to shoot. A shame it wasn't a closer match, but Dave deserves his spot at the top of the ratings table! (For now ;-)
2020-06-17(D) Dave Mareske vs Dave Ramsey German winWhat a treat to play Dave Ramsey! I wish we had a closer game. As defender, I HIP the HMG (bought that up) a squad and the 9-1, bought some extra "?" and one 6F Mine. The HMG stole the show, had some nice first shots and ROF, after Turn 4 movement for the Americans Dave called it. Thanks for a great game Dave.

2019-10-10(A) Michael Rodgers vs Magnus Rimvall American win
2018-12-01(D) Jason Wert vs Michael Daschbach German winAwesome scenario, really tense match that had the Germans winning by 1.5 VP in the last half phase. Americans had to get desperate and CH from the 88 ended their hopes.
2018-10-22(D) X von Marwitz vs David Wallace American winInteresting scenario with quite some variability due to VC and purchasing options. I played the defending Germans in this one. In this late-war action, the Germans have a brittle force that is reinforced by a number of Guns and AA-Guns. The US have a well-led elite infantry force that have to push through and/or eliminate the artillery pieces. The Germans will have no chance to stand up to directly vs. the US firepower. So they have to fight a delaying action having a very careful view on their ELR of 2. In our game, the US attacked along the path that I had anticipated. But they attacked with EVERYTHING along that path - which I had not anticipated. It seemed at first, that despite running into a number of traps I had sprung, that he could break my defence despite getting a beating. But then, the German Sniper wreaked havoc. This allowed the Germans just enough respite to regain their balance. Unfortunately, I malfed both artillery pieces early on and was unable to repair one of them. This is of quite some consequence as those Guns can "fire" for gaining VC if able to. In the end, maybe not being able to do so as intended may have made the difference in this scenario, because close to the end, the VP total was even - except that the US would be able to spike a captured 88 AA-Gun, forcing the weak German to come to the US to try to catch up for these 2VP. Alas, this did not work out after an up to now tenacious German defence that attempted all tricks of the book to stem the US tide, so that my opponent was ready to concede on a number of occasions, of which I talked him out of because I saw hope for the US. It was fun to play despite my Germans having lost in the end.
2018-06-23(A) Paolo Cariolato vs Alberto Biserni German win
2018-04-08(A) Jonathan Kapleau vs Flaherty, Larry German win
2018-02-13(A) nathan wegener vs Paul Works German winBought all assets to make smoke. No one brought smoke. Stuffed by good defense as a result.
2017-12-02(A) Jeff B vs Christopher Fleury American winBetween the VC choices and the discretionary purchases this one seems highly replayable. The extra points for shooting the ART guns is very interesting. My Americans pushed hard up the west side, with the 10-2, three squads, and a MMG holding watch in the middle. The Germans revealed both purchased HIP units early after they were each awarded juicy shots (which amounted to nothing). Americans returned fire, reducing a squad but generating a German hero (to match their own purchased one). This was how the next couple turns went, the Americans brazenly pushing forward while the Germans safely retreated to set up a new line of defense. Going into Turn 4 the score was 5:1 Germans (they had also purchased 2 extra VP). This turn saw a lot of action as the Americans placed both of their purchased DCs and both HIP German guns were brought onboard to attempt to stop this. By the end of the half turn most every German standing tall was broken and they decided to call it a day.
2017-10-28(A) Mike Jackson vs Taka M American win
2017-10-21(A) Michael Rodgers vs Tom Arnold American winI won a match of J193 RAFF'S RULES with the Americans against Tom Arnold. I went for a win-by-exit strategy, trying to avoid the AA guns and the strength of the German defence. My troops went up their right side. I lost one squad early to the FL through the woods down the road; I had seen that possibility pre-game, but forgot about it during the game. The was the only American CVP loss during the game. The Germans shifted fairly well, but the Americans were able to break the MMG crew to continue down the right side. The small flak gun was mid-board in woods and pivoted to shoot at the Americans with limited LOS and without effect. It and its crew went down in CC. The ART pieces fired every phase that they could, but one of them broke mid-game and eliminated itself on a repair attempt (for two additional American points). The 88 was in woods more on the American left and German rear, so it had a very hindered LOS to the Americans. It put some acqs down, but never hurt anyone. By turn 5, most of the Americans were in the last woods clump on the right. Their fire broke some of the Germans positioned there and two Germans LMG broke during that turn. As the Americans started exiting on the last turn, the German MMG cowered, which opened the way for them. The Americans ended with 29 points to the German 10.
