Overview:
The Slovakian Army’s uprising against their German foe had failed in the center, and that in the eastern part of Slovakia was in danger of collapsing as well. The last substantial reserve was the 2nd Czechoslovakian Airborne Brigade, which was comprised of Soviet-trained former POWs and had been flown n weeks earlier to organize the local populace against possible German occupation. Although these paratroops had been re-trained in the ways of the Red Army, many of their officers felt that the best way to fight the Germans was via guerilla warfare. As some headed for the hills, others maintained their military bearing as they attempted to defend the headquarters of the uprising, located in the town of Banska Bystricka.Attacker: German (SS) (Kampfgruppe Schill)

2022-08-25 | (D) Jeff B | vs | John Fedoriw | Slovakian win | 6.5 hrs | Germans entered with about 1/3 of their force making for the northern hill, 1/3 for the valley, and 1/3 onto the nasty Board 36. For the most part it was uncontested, though a squad was KIA with a sneaky LOS. The northern assault suffered a large setback when I got lucky knocking out a StuG with my BAZ, and another StuG there broke its MA. Both my guns showed their faces to scare the Germans off the high ground but, as has happened way too often to me lately, one of them (my best positioned) broke on its first shot, never to return. The Germans probably should have hastily loaded up the HTs and drove for the exit, but they were still a bit disorganzied from the stiff partisan resistance, and had yet to break clear of most of the difficult terrain. The southern attackers had switched tack toward the valley after running into a minefield, and just beat half my reinforcing partisans to the central woods mass. The other half of my partisans were able to make it onto the lower reaches of the Board 58 hills in the far west, but they would soon be hemmed in by the approaching Germans who then exploited the weak middle. A constant game of cat and mouse thus ensued, with each side scrambling to bolster the weaker parts of their lines. A large chunk of my force stuck on Board 36 was kept in check by his upper level Germans on Board 58, but these men in turn were sandwiched on the same board by my stout defenders on the Level 3 hills. Casualties were low as both sides poked and prodded. Eventually someone would have to make a move though and, with the onus on them to complete the VC, this ended up being the Germans. They were able to drive an unladen HT off, but another StuG was fried with a molotov, and a squad eliminated by NQ. Meanwhile a freshly loaded HT containing the 8-1 and squad was shocked. When this turned into a confirmed kill, and another squad failed to deploy to load onto the sMG HT, the game was over. Pretty exciting and dynamic scenario. Always fun to play with partisans. | |
