Overview:
In the morning, the American paratroopers from the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment attacked from the east and the southeast, supported by tanks from the 2nd Armored Division. Fallschirmjagerregiment 6's outer defenses slowly pulled back towards the main line of fighting and prevented the Americans from pursuing them decisively. Once again the American artillery and fighter-bomber attacks rained down on the Fallschirmjagers' defensive line before the ground troops stormed the area. In the north of Carentan, the American paratroopers attempted an early-morning crossing of the canal in inflatable boats, but they were destroyed in the crossfire. The Fallschirmjager were harassed by constant artillery and air attacks, and the Americans finally managed to break through the German lines in the area of Ostbataillon 635. In response, Oberst Friedrich Freiherr (Baron) von der Heydt ordered Kompanie 8, FJR 6, to lead a quick counterattack to try to push back the Americans.Attacker: German (Elements Kompanie 8, Fallschirmjagerregiment 6)
