Overview:
Major John Davis had reason to be apprehensive. The night before, his battalion commander and several of his staff were killed. Major Davis' first mission was to cross the same ground where more than four hundred fifty Japanese had been killed the previous night in a massive banzai charge, and reach the summit of Watertank Hill. Unsure of what defenses lay before him, Major Davis decided against a frontal assault and sent one company around the north side and one company around the south side of the high ground. At 1045 hours, as the 1st Battalion approached the hill, they came under intense fire from several caves and from the damaged concrete water tank as well.Attacker: American (503rd Regimental Combat Team)
