Overview:
From the hilly terrain overlooking the railyards, LtCol Hawkins' 1st Battalion, 1st Marines could clearly make out several KPA roadblocks not far from the main railway station as well as others up the boulevard that lead towards Nanmaedmun (Great South Gate), the fourteenth century gateway into the once walled city of Seoul. To the east of the station was a park promontory, at the base of Nam-san, up which ran 1,000 steps to an ancient Shinto Temple, whose heights were being claimed by elements of the US Army's 32nd Regiment. For Hawkins, the objective for the day was to have Charlie Company on the left, under Captain Wray, seize the railroad station and clear out the main buildings of the railyard, while Captain Barrow's Alpha Company, on the right, would look to secure the park promontory and the nearby buildings. The attack was prepped by artillery, air support and mortar fire after which the companies descended the hillside in columns of platoons.Attacker: American (USMC) (A and C Companies, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, B Company, H&S Company, 1st Marine Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division with VMF-212.)
