Overview:

Group Oriola, composed of battered remnants of the 299th Infantry Division and reinforced with elements of the 14th Infantry Division, was commanded by Lt. General Graf von Oriola. Orsha fell on the morning of 27 June, and Fourth Army forces were ordered to fall back to defensive positions in order to make a defense of the Berezina River. Meanwhile, the 3rd Belorussian Front already released the exploitation forces of the 5th Guards Tank Army, and they were racing to cut off more German forces and seize crossing sites on the Berezina. On the night of 27 June, the 56th Guards Rifle Division captured the village of Krugloye, which now threatened to cut off the XXVII Corps. Group Oriola counterattacked at Krugloye on the morning of 28 June in an attempt to gain time for elements of XXVII Corps to withdraw.

2021-08-12(A) Andy Bagley vs Neil Brunger German winThis scenario needs detailed understanding of the aircraft rules, including Dive Bombers, AA fire and the BFP aircraft notes. I think we got it right but can’t be certain. After the game we both felt that the scenario slightly favours the Germans, and that their strategy should be to deploy as much as possible and then attack on a broad front. The Russians don’t have many squads and will struggle to defend everywhere against a “swarm” of half-squads.

Of course, the Level 2 hexes of building 22X7 have great fields of fire, but they will get shot down sooner or later and there’s plenty of cover for the German advance in the meantime. We also found it hard to find a good place for that Russian 76mm INF gun.

How to get those Turn 4 reinforcements into play is another real challenge for the Russians. The infantry really have to come on as riders otherwise they’ll never reach the action, but if they unload on their turn of entry then the tanks won’t get far enough to make a difference before the German aircraft appear (could try the sleaze tactic of turning turrets to knock them off, but this is risky with morale 7 units). And if they stay on as riders they’re particularly vulnerable to the aircraft. So all in all we struggled to think of a really effective defensive strategy for the Russians.
