Overview:
With the Americans closing in on the capital city, General Yamashita had no intention of allowing his troops to be trapped fighting there and so ordered a withdrawal eastward. But Rear-Admiral Sanji Iwabuchi, in command of some 17,000 naval troops stationed in Manila, was not subject to Yamashita's control and was determined to fight to the end.
