Overview:

The Russian attack on the Karelian Isthmus had been going on for eleven days. The Finnish II Corps, between Onega and Segozero lakes in eastern Karelia, had to part with two of its three divisions to bolster the defense of the isthmus, and now had only one division (the 1st) and one brigade (the 21nd) left. That was too little to seriously resist the Russian 32nd Army if the Russians were to attack in this sector too. That was why the Corps was given an order to start a fighting withdrawal to the west. On June 20, the same day Vyborg fell, the Russian 176th Infantry Division began its offensive. In the morning it attacked the stronghold Leijona-tukikohta (Lion Base) with company strength, but the attack was repulsed. The attack was renewed at 1400 hours, this time with a whole battalion and artillery support. The Russians were able to achieve a breakthrough, took Lion Base and advanced several hundred meters. Among other units, the elite Jääkärikomppania of the 1st Division was ordered to counter-attack. It arrived and immediately went to action against the advancing Russians.
