Overview:
The key the defense of Finland was the Karelian Isthmus and the key to the Isthmus was the Mannerheim Line, a series of strongpoints built around bunkers and fortified towns. The 5th Division was billeted in the Summa sector, when the first Russian push began on 17 December. By the 19th, the Russians reached the village of Summa. But even with the first use of Heavy KV-1 tanks and heavy close quarter Village fighting, the Russian attack suffered heavy losses and they were forced to retreat.
