Overview:

The first Chinese victory in the Second Sino-Japanese War was the Battle of Taierzhuang, which began with the Japanese assault on the city of Linyi. Prior to that attack, the ambitious and aggressive Gen. Itagaki Seishiro's 5th Division had driven Gen. Pang Bingxum's 39th Division into the town and now prepared to annihilate Pang's force once and for all. Bristling for a fight and confident of victory, the 5th Division, hurtled headlong into Linyi, led by battle-hardened infantry, reinforced with armor and artillery. Though outnumbered by the defenders, Itakagi assumed Japanese technological superiority would-once again-carry the day.

2023-10-02(A) Dave Mareske vs Paul Works Chinese winThe elite Japanese rolled a lot of 9s, but still was able to get into the last building with the reinforcing Chinese and roll a CC. Chinese LMGs took out two of the tanks and the other one got immobilized in bypass and kept breaking its MA (3 times!, guess I rolled some 12s too!). It was a fun scenario.

2023-08-06(D) Jobbo Fett vs RootinPutin Japanese winIt feels far too safe for the Japanese to show up and push through the Chinese defenses. A full force of Japanese elite squads, several leaders and tanks to boot, the many banzais were able to enter any location I had defenders in, and they all promptly died in the cc phase. There wasnt much of a point even bringing in the chinese reinforcements as I'd lost all the victory locations and the two afvs I get are damnable l3/35 tankettes, no match for the japanese counterparts. The balance for the scenario doesnt matter either way and 6 turns for a halfboard is far too much time for the Japanese to do whatever they like.
2023-07-26(A) Andy Bagley vs Mike Grogan Japanese winGood scenario and a close-fought game. After a steady advance in the first couple of turns, I sent my tanks down the road through the Chinese lines in an attempt to stop his reinforcements (which I guessed would enter from the south) reaching the village. All three tanks got through, and although all three were later destroyed, they did stop most of the Chinese infantry from reinforcing the defenders. In the end it all came down to the last stone building, which I captured with a small banzai charge. The Chinese managed to get back in and would have won had they succeeded in the final turn close combat, but the odds were against them and the Japanese held.
