Overview:

Manstein's counterattack near Fastov pushed the 3rd Guards Tank Army on to the defensive, but he could not quite deliver a repeat of the “backhand blow” as he had hoped. The new Panther battalions arrived for the attack, but by now the grenadier and fusilier regiments were depleted of veterans after the long retreat to the Dnepr. Thus it would fall to the 1. SS-Panzer-Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler's panzers to force the issue.

2022-12-30(D) Mark Oakley vs David GoldmanA Russian winRussians got some lucky rolls and won the tank battle with the Germans. The infantry really played no part.
2021-03-18(D) nathan wegener vs Steve Pleva German (SS) winOpponent headed down the middle and open flank. My infantry held tough in the middle but the open flank collapsed. He had 3 tanks near the west edge facing the middle so I attempted to ambush with the 4 entering T34s crashing thru some trees. Sadly despite entering on the flank this failed miserably... A couple nice APCR shots with turret rotations and a couple point blank IF shots did me in...
2021-01-14(A) John Gorkowski vs Bill Stoppel Russian winToo much chess and not enough grudge in this match, so I rate it very good, but not great. Per the usual cliché, Bill’s Russians cut down my last turn run for the board edge with a two down two shot to win even though I did exit one Tiger and left one immobilized Panther on the board. The Russians lost four tanks, three squads, and one gun.

The Russian infantry set up concealed in cover near and along the board creases, hex rows 4Q and 85Q, with their guns hidden in woods (4O1 for the 85L) and orchard (85Y3 for the 76L) near midfield.

Then began a game of chess defined by the deliberate immobilization rules. Well aware of their large target size, my Tigers and Panthers strove to avoid coming within six hexes of Russian tanks and guns for fear they would knock out my tracks even if they could not penetrate my armor. So, the Germans surged forward among woods and walls on their right (board 85) reaching the Russian main line of resistance, hex row Q, by turn two with no losses. In the meantime, Russian T-34s and SU85s had ensconced themselves among the 85S6-T7 walled field.

Furious cross fires (the mad minute) erupted on turn 3 and continued into turn 4 as German tanks darted forward into key positions with no choice but to come within six hexes. A hull down SU85 in the walled field (85S6) killed a Tiger nested between trees (85M1), seven hexes away! A Panther later moved between those two (into 85O2) to kill that SU85, but was in turn immobilized (as feared) by the Russian 85L AA in 4O1. That Russian AA gun had earlier fired at a sprinting Panzer IV, but missed. Said Panzer IV outflanked the Russians by getting behind the walled field, but was immobilized in 85U4 by an ATR shot. Unfazed, that Panzer IV immediately killed a hull down T34 in 85U9 with APCR in the turret and later killed a second T34 with AP in the turret before going up in flames sparked by fire from the Russian AA gun. Opposing infantry traded small arms and mortar fire that broke a few German squads, drove the Russian troops back from the woods north of their AA gun, eventually silenced that gun, and killed a Russian squad in the country church at 85R3. A Tiger mauled another T34 on the German right.

Then came the second stage of the chess game. Well aware that they could lose due to tank losses, the Russian armor started rolling back and staying in motion relying on machine gun fire to deter German infantry while surrendering the field to German armor.

So, both sides made steady progress toward the north edge. The Russian 76L (85Y3) popped out, pivoted, and fired to hit and kill a Panther rushing north through the intersection at 85Y6. A Tiger made it to the board edge and remained in motion there for lack of MP to cross over. Four or five German squads run right up the east edge into the 85Z9 woods cluster as out-of-place Russian infantry in the 85AA1 cluster struggled to cross over through German machine gun fire.

The Russians did position a single 8-0 leader and one in-motion T34 around the northeast corner of board 85 to block German exit. On the last turn, my Tiger pulled alongside that T34, stopped and fired (trying APCR first), but missed and then had to exit. A German half squad overran the Russian 8-0 to get him out of the way. My key stack, an 8-0 with two full squads, then ran north close to the east edge, but fell to machine gun fire from a motion T34 in the 85CC5 woods. Nobody else was close enough to exit and so the Russians won.

Like a said, a very good scenario. But a little more incentive to come to grips, rather than keep distance (Germans) and slip away (Russians), for an epic fist-to-cuffs would make it great.
