Overview:
Lieutenant Colonel Holton had three experienced companies available to him from the 2nd Battalion, 315th Infantry Regiment, for the defense of Hatten. They were supported by a platoon of M18 Hellcats, ably led by Lieutenant Robert Jones. The Germans, their eyes fixed on the neighboring village of Rittershoffen, launched a series of spoiling attacks on each of these companies, with the goal of ensuring the Americans in Hatten did not interfere with German plans to attack Rittershoffen. Smaller German attacks fell on E and F Companies positioned in the southern portion of the village. The greater German effort, supported by a number of panzers, fell on G Company in western Hatten in and around “The Fort”.
