Overview:

After the troopers of 1st Cavalry Division reached the shore of Manila Bay on 12 February, they turned their attention north. In their advance toward the dock facilities and the Walled City, the cavalrymen would encounter a number of Japanese strongpoints that had to be eliminated one at a time. These places, previously unknown to most of these men would be forever burned into their memories: the Army/Navy Club, the Manila Hotel, the Bayview Hotel, the High Commissioner's Office, the Philippine University, and the General Hospital Complex, as well as many high-rise apartments and hotels along the way. At each location, the Japanese would fight to the death. Many cavalrymen would pay the ultimate price to see the defenders got their wish.
