Overview:

The Netherlands Battalion, attached to the American 2nd Infantry Division, was holding the town of Hoengsong on the night of 12 February. This Dutch unit, recruited from Regiment van Heutsz, a line infantry regiment of the Royal Netherlands Army, was there covering the retreat of the American 38th Regiment during the Chinese FOURTH PHASE Offensive. Around 2100, a column of men was seen coming down the main road from the northeast, into the center of town and towards the Dutch command post. The Dutch immediately opened fire. Shouts of "OK, ROK's!" came from the column. The Netherlands Battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel M. P. A. den Ouden, however was not convinced, so he sent Sergeant Parker and an interpreter towards the troops on the road to investigate.
