Overview:
With the defeat at Wadi Akarit, the Axis force withdrew to the Enfidaville Line. One of the anchors of this line was the Takrouna Hill, from which much of the front could be overlooked. General Messe ordered the hill to be fortified as much as possible and a battalion from the Trieste Division supported by German troops were set to defend it. Montgomery ordered the 5th New Zealand Brigade to take the hill, After a barrage lasting seven hours, the 21st Battalionsupported by tankswas sent to make a frontal assault. The battalion suffered heavy casualties from the stout defenders and enemy artillery and was forced to withdraw. Next, the 23rd Battalion moved up the line to make a flanking attack.Attacker: New Zealand (23rd Battalion, 5th New Zealand Brigade, 2nd New Zealand Division with Armor support)
