Overview:
The US 7th Army struggled to regain the initiative as the German offensive Operation NORDWIND was sputtering out. Appalling weather hampered American forces' ability to exploit setbacks suffered by the Wehrmacht in the ill-fated operation. General Patch, commander of the Seventh Army, ordered the 12th Armored Division to attack the German Bulge at Herrlisheim. The 12th was untested in combat and had yet to work out the kinks with Tank-Infantry cooperation. To make matters worse, the tanks of the 17th AIB, Combat Command B, 12th Armored Division had not been fitted with rear phones in the rush to get them to the front. Therefore, the infantry accompanying them had no way to directly communicate with the crews inside once taken under fire. The American halftrack crews advanced with the infantry, their dismantled machine guns at the ready. After a harrowing approach to the town where the concealed German AT guns raked the American armor, the 17th Armored Infantry Battalion with some surviving tanks grabbed a foothold in the southern end of the town. The defending Volkssturm, stiffened by the presence of the 10th SS Panzer Division "Frundsberg", launched a ferocious counterattack to expel the Yankees.Attacker: German (SS) (553. Volks-GrenadierDivision, SS Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 22, 10 SS Panzer-Division "Frundsberg")
Defender: American (17th Armored Infantry Battalion, Combat Command B, 12th "Hellcat" Armored Division)
