Overview:
As part of the final battle for Berlin, Colonel-General Vasily Chuikov prepared his assault across the Landwehr Canal. For this task, he had the 8th Guards and 1st Guards Tank Armies. Using one corps to engage the zoo flaktower and seal off the Lützow Plaza, Chuikov concentrated his attack on a two-kilometer front. The area was defended by Panzer-Division "Müncheberg," who had retreated behind the canal on 28 April. The German troops were tired, hungry, and desperate.
