Overview:

For the Reich, the end was near. On the Eastern Front, the Soviets were practicing their own version of the Blitzkrieg. Often, the main impediment to a more rapid advance was overstretched supply lines. With total victory at hand, the Soviet commanders were eager to deal the death blow that would bring this war to an end. Key to this effort was the capture of a bridgehead on the west bank of the Oder by the 1st Ukranian Front during the Vistula-Oder Offensive in January, which allowed Soviet forces to encircle Breslau, a city located at a vital road juncture they would need in order to provide logistical support for the next mass assault. Hitler had declared Breslau a Festung, meaning it was to be defended to the last bullet. Hunkered down behind the fortifications, the civilian population had spent months constructing, the hardened veteran of SS-Regiment "Besslein" were determined to do just that.
