Overview:
The German attack on southern Stalingrad was the responsibility of XXXXVIII Panzerkorps, with Panzer-Division 24 and Infanterie-Division 94 attacking from the west, and Infanterie-Division (mot.) 29 attacking from the south. The defending 62nd Army units were in bad shape, but the timely arrival of the 92nd Infantry Brigade (comprised of Northern Fleet Marines) bolstered the defenses, and the German attack ran up against tough resistance near the Grain Elevator and Food Combine. At the same time, Panzer-Division 24 was transferred to LI Armeekorps to aid the attack on Mamayev Kurgan. This left the reduction of southern Stalingrad to Infanterie-Division (mot.) 29 and Infanterie-Division 94.
