Overview:

The moment of truth had arrived for Operation HUBERTUS, and General der Panzertruppe Friedrich Paulus was determined to make this effort the last one required. To make this happen, several heavily-armed "Pioneer Battalions" were sent to Stalingrad. These pioneers were veterans of earlier urban battles, and many smoked casually as they waited their turn once the artillery bombardments lifted. When Hauptmann Rettenmaier of Grenadier-Regiment 578 advised that the Soviets were fighting harder here then he had ever seen up to this time in the entire war, the hardened veterans shrugged it off, as they had "...seen worse in Voronezh and Rostov." Moving to their attack positions on 11 November, the pioneers assualted the Barrikady complex at daybreak laden with engineering tools, flamethrowers, and explosives-but not much ammunition for personal weapons.

2024-01-13(D) Andy Goldin vs Steven Pleva German winSteve and I played this at Winter Offensive. Good scenario. Steve did a great job of using HS to probe my defense to identify targets for his kill stacks, which melted my Russians. My defenders were not well served by serially malf-ing their MGs nor by my ineffectual mortar placement. Like the other scenarios in the pack, there's common rules for rubble generation and placement, which put rubble basically everywhere. Although there was adequate cover for the German advance, the best way to go seems to be advancing through the large factory on the German left/Russian right since it counts for VPs and provides some cover with each move. Good scenario, I'd play it again as the other side.
