Overview:
By 6 January 1945, the main elements of Major-General Grigory Lazlo's 30th Rifle Corps. 7th Army, of Marshal Rodion Malinovsky's 2nd Ukrainian Front had pushed into the Újpest and Rákospalota areas just north of the central part of Budapest, on the Pest side of the city. Their main goal was to split the Axis defensive line where two of the primary German defenders, Panzergrenadier-Division Feldherrnhalle and Panzer-Division 13, were joined, and then drive toward the city center. To accomplish this, 25th Guards Rifle Division would push south against elements of the Feldherrnhalle around the Magdolnavárosi (today Angyalföld) railyards, while further to the southwest, 151st and 155th Rifle Divisions of the 30th Rifle Corps would push south toward the Zugló area against Panzergrenadier-Regiment 93. The primary terrain feature where the two German defenders met was the Rákosrendezo marshaling yard, anchored at its southern end by the Rákorendezo railway station. Located just south of the Rákos-patak, a natural stream that ran from the hills outside of Budapest into the Danube, the railway station became the primary target of the three Soviet divisions when they launched a series of concentrated attacks beginning that morning.Attacker: Russian (659th Rifle Regiment, 155th Rifle Division and 25th Guards Rifle Division, 30th Rifle Corps with 3rd Tank Brigade, 23rd Tank Corps, 7th Guards Army, 2nd Ukrainian Front)
Defender: German (Panzergrenadier-Regiment 93, Panzer-Division 13)

2024-08-25 | (D) Ron Garcia | vs | Darryl M. | German win | 4.5 hrs | First of all - WAY too many overlays! Some are even stacked on top of each other due to the way overlays are cut out. Since this exact configuration is used in at least two scenarios, and given the price of the module, I think this mass of overlays should have been one giant overlay. Poster putty and plexiglass are a must if playing face-to-face! As far as the scenario itself, it was fun. As the Germans, I felt like I was going to be overrun every turn. My pickets did a fair job of slowing the Russian horde, but eventually my forces were lined up in the two victory hexrows (basically, the two rows with all the buildings). Good use of mines - I suggest buying the max - and some decent rolls helped blunt the Russian momentum. With fortified buildings behind them, the Russians were running out of time. After the Russian turn 5 player turn and the silly "mad dash and hope for the best" strategy, there wasn't a realistic chance of them taking the required number of building locations with only half a turn left. If the scenario were a turn or two longer so the Russians could regroup after finding the fortifications, I think the Germans would have no chance. I'd say the game designers got the scenario length just right. | |

2024-07-25 | (A) neal ekengren | vs | German win | Overall fun scenario. The Russians entering East have to cover lots of ground to arrive at the VC Buildings. The Russians entering North will likely run into a fortified building complex which is a tough nut to crack but they do have plenty toys. Germans will be torn on how to defend so much map with very little. If we are getting scenarios with giant rail yards it sure seems like a single rail yard map board would have been a good idea. I don't mind overlays but darn.............lots to lay in here. |
