Overview:

As part of the offensive against the Japanese army in Manchuria, the 1st Far Eastern Front had to take the important crossroads of Mudanjiang. Its two armies each launched an advanced detachment formed around a tank brigade. The 76th Brigade of the 5th Army, like most of those engaged in the offensive, had mixed T-26 and T-34/85s. There were also two motorized rifle battalions, a regiment of Su-76s and one of ISU-152s. . . The defenders were completely outclassed. The Japanese 5th Army, however, formed an ad-hoc detachment of student officers, reinforced by a battery of 150 mm howitzers. Entrusted to Colonel Kobayashi, he was deployed to Motaoshih, one of the last localities before Mudanjiang. On August 12, at the end of the day, Kobayashi's men saw Lieutenant-Colonel Chaplyguine's brigade approaching. . .
