Overview:
Early April 1944 on the Russian Front saw heavy fighting around the Ungheni Targ Bridgehead. During the course of the fighting, the Panzer-Pioneer-Bataillon “Grossdeutschland” had been encircled near Beresti. After sustaining heavy casualties, the unit was in a critical situation and attempted a breakout by crossing the Pruth Rverto to their west and pull back to the south. By early AM on the 5th, the crossing attempts had failed and the Pioneers urgently requested help. Help would come in the form of Hauptmann Koppe’s Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 23, (PAA23). After clearing a minefield belt, Koppe set out with 8 SPW’s, 2 Assault Guns and roughly 60 Panzergrenadiers.Attacker: German (Koppe’s PAA23, Sturmgeschuetz-Batterie 1017 and 5/Marsch-Bataillon Kothe)
