Overview:

Operation Stosser (Hawk) was the last major German Airborne operation of the war. It was intended to cut off a major crossroad at Belle Croix Jalhay located in the Hohes Venne. By cutting off the road, American supplies would not reach the frontline forces fighting in the northern section of the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge. However, a day long delay and a dispersed airdrop at night was to prove an inauspicious start for the Fallschirmjägers of Kampfgruppe von der Heydte. By the following afternoon the units' commander Oberst Friedrich August Freiherr von der Heydte with the help of Kriegsberichter Bruno von Kayser had managed to gather 300 men, less than half the original force. With such a small force von der Heydte decided to change his mission of a roadblock instead to a reconnaissance and await the arrival of the 12th SS Panzer Division.
