Overview:
The strategic initiative gained with the capture of Fort Eben-Emael and the Albert Canal crossings were briefly stalled by the demolition of the Maas bridges by Dutch forces. It wasn't until the early hours of the next morning that the German Panzer units could resume their advance, following the establishment of makeshift pontoon bridges. By daybreak, the 4th Panzer Division was sweeping southwest, bypassing the congestion at Maastricht. The Belgian III Corps had tactically retreated from the Liège fortress to evade encirclement, leaving the Liège Fortress Regiment to conduct rearguard actions and slow the German onslaught. The Belgian strategy to conduct a defensive action along the Albert Canal crumbled with the swift loss of critical crossings and the fall of Fort Eben-Emael.Attacker: German (Schützenbatallion 5, 4.
