Overview:

Polish Major Henryk Dobrzanski and elements of the 110th Reserve Cavalry Regiment refused to surrender in September 1939. With 50 volunteers from the Regiment, the Major continued to fight the Germans in the Kielce region and areas around the Holy Cross Mountains. Calling themselves a “Detached unit of the Polish Army,” the Major had troops continue to wear their army uniforms and ranks. Through the winter of 1939-1940 they waited for the promised French and British offensive against the Germans. Other soldiers joined the unit and by March 1940 they numbered over 100. German security forces under the SS gathered about 5000 troops in the Kielce area to hunt down these Polish holdouts. The SS did so without coordinating with the German Army and did not have heavy weapons support. On 31 March, the German Polizei Battalion 51 (order police) approached the village of Hucisko where the Poles were stationed. The Poles waited in ambush in the heavily forested area.
