Overview:
Sunrise on 8 July found Oberst Georg Zierhold's Grenadier-Regiment 508 in possession of central Ponyri, with Bataillon III, led by Hauptmann Erich Mundstock, having penetrated as far south as the schoolhouse. The Soviet 3rd Tank Corps under Major Ge·neral Maxim Sinenko had arrived late the night before, and Zierhold was expecting an all-out counterattack. His mission now was defensive, and preventing reinforcements from reaching the train station and resisting Sinenko's attack from the east was vital. Given little time to rest, Mundstock dug in around the sturdy concrete schoolhouse and braced for the inevitable hammer blow.Attacker: Russian (3rd Battalion, 1023rd Rifle Regiment and 27th Guards Tank Battalion)
