Overview:
The German WACHT AM RHEIN offensive was in its fourth day, and the deep thrust by SS-Panzer-Division 1 was threatening to break through the American defenses. Leading the German spearhead was Kampfgruppe Peiper, a powerful battlegroup built around SS-Panzer-Regiment 1 and reinforced by the Tiger IIs of schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 501. Kampfgruppe Peiper's many attempts to break out of the Ambleve River valley were frustrated at every turn by blown bridges until no choice remained except to push straight up the valley through Stoumont.
