Overview:
After the swirling battles on the Hungarian plain during October, Stalin ordered Marshal Rodion Malinovsky, commander of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, to take the Hungarian capital by 3 November. Malinovsky failed to do so, thanks to stiffening Hungarian resistance on the Attila I line, German armored counterattacks, and Hitler declaring Budapest a Festung on 1 December. The city's population seemed oblivious to the situation as shops and cafes remained open and carolers filled churches and squares. It looked like just another Christmas in Budapest but the growing din of artillery fire heralded the steady advance of the Red Army. On 26 December, the 2nd Ukrainian Front, with help from Marshal Fyodor Tolbukhin's 3rd Ukrainian Front, finally encircled the city, breached the Attila I line, and assaulted the suburbs of Pest.Attacker: Russian (151st Rifle Division with 36th Guards Rifle Division)
