Overview:

With the fall of Manila in February 1945, Japanese forces of General Tomoyuki Yamashita's Fourteenth Area Army were pushed deeper into the mountainous terrain of Bessang Pass, a strategically important mountain pass near Cervantes in Northern Luzon. The unpaved road officially known as Highway 4 ran right through the pass and became a critical supply route through the Cordillera mountains for both sides. The campaign for Bessang Pass began in early 1945 and was spearheaded by the 121st Infantry Regiment of the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines-Northern Luzon (USAFIP-NL), This was a guerrilla force composed of locals commanded by US Army Colonel Russell Volckmann. The USAFIP-NL liberated San Fernando, La Union, on 23 March. However, their follow-up advance through the heavily fortified Bessang Pass stalled for several months due to spring rain and exhausted supplies.
