Overview:

Both North and South Korean Armies had engaged in border skirmishes and raids across the 38th parallel for several years. Initially, these were conducted by guerilla groups against constabulary forces, but the stakes gradually increased as each side built their forces along the border. When Colonel Kim Hu-chin's 1st Infantry Regiment, along with the rest of the 38th Guards Brigade, crossed the 45-kilometer front of the Ongjin Peninsula def ended by Colonel Paik In-yup's ROK 17th Infantry Regiment, Paik was a bit surprised by the intensity but not shocked at the idea. The ROK 1st Company, 1st Battalion, led by Captain Gang Eun-deok, had arrived and operated at Changdong since 0730. However, as the haze disappeared on the battlefield, 1st Company discovered that they were surrounded by the North Koreans.
