Overview:

Operation BAGRATION commenced on the third anniversary of BARBAROSSA. It was a well-coordinated mass assault, the size and scope of which dwarfed virtually every offensive operation that had preceded it. At the start of the offensive, the village of Shumilino, which lay at the junction between the Soviet 6th Guards Army and the 43rd Army, bore the brunt of the attack. As the last position at which the Germans could halt the Red Army before it reached the Dauga River, Shumilino had to be held at all costs. This fact was not lost on General Georg-Has Reinhardt, Commander of the 3rd Panzer Army, who had ordered the extensive fortification of the strongpoint, just in case the widely anticipated Soviet offensive happened to materialize in this sector. On 22 June, it did just that. Following a concentrated air and artillery bombardment, the infantry moved in.
