Overview:

The death throes of the “1000- year Reich” took place in the German capital, a mere 12 years following Hitler’s ascent to power. With no hope of victory, only the most fanatical (or, in the case of the Volkssturm, most coerced) remnants of what had once been the most feared armed force in Europe continued the fight. Ironically, many of those fanatics were not German at all, but rather men from other European countries who had volunteered to fight for the Waffen-SS. These soldiers had sworn an oath to their Führer and now set out to demonstrate their allegiance to one man, though it would cost many of them their lives. Following a predictably unsuccessful counterattack against Chuikov’s 28th and 29th Guards Rifle Corps near the Tempelhof Airport, the native-born Frenchmen of the SS-Sturmbattalion “Charlemagne” and Scandinavians of the SS-Panzergrenadier- Regiment “Danmark” – along with a smattering of grimly determined Hitler Youth – dug in for the inevitable Soviet counterattack.
