Overview:

The Soviets launched a major offensive in southern Poland on January 12th, where they had good initial success. In the evening, two battalions and a submachine gun company of the 61st Guards Tank Brigade were sent ahead to Lisów. After letting a large panzer column drive by, they took Lisów by surprise, capturing the 17th Panzer Division's artillery commander in the process. By daybreak, the Germans realized that a substantial Russian force was in their rear. They sent the 17th Panzer Division and the 424th Schwere Panzer Abteilung to attack from all directions. The 424th Schwere Panzer Abteilung, outfitted with 26 Tiger Is and 28 Tiger IIs, had trouble navigating the soft ground. The well-trained 61st Guards Tank Brigade set up panzer ambushes in the woods and the walled cemetery.
