Overview:

Operation Nordwind was launched to take advantage of the thin front offered by the American Seventh Army. The Seventh was covering the positions that had been occupied by Patton’s Third Army, now deployed in the Ardennes. Initial thrusts by the attacking XIII SS-Korps were poorly led and gained minimal ground even though they outnumbered the defending GIs. Reinforced overnight by the 17th Volksgrenadier Regiment and the 36th Volksgrenadier Division, the XIII SS-Korps continued its attacks the following morning.
Attacker: German (SS) (SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment 37, SS-Panzerjäger Abteilung 653, and Flammkompanie 353)
Defender: American (71st and 397th Infantry Regiments, 44th Infantry Division and 776th Tank Destroyer and 749th Tank Battalions)

2024-09-23(A) Kevin Duval vs Dwayne DuvalA German (SS) winThe Germans got mauled early on in their approach, then I concentrated on keeping CVP losses to minimum. They barely made it!
In Turn 7 with all Americans broken I had just enough (exactly 70 Exit VP) left to exit. I did manage to also Control ALL buildings on board 42.

2018-07-21(D) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best German (SS) winWell, I messed up with my defense and my armor went down like dominoes. My only useful asset was my 60mm OBA which destroyed the flame Hetzer and a 75L Stug. My 9-2 and squad with my 50 Cal went berserk, abandoned the gun and were shot down in a charge to Valhalla. Fun scenario, but my performance was mistake heavy. Dan’s Schwerpunkts kicked my backside.
2017-03-03(D) Paul Legg vs Ray Porter American win
2013-09-26(A) X von Marwitz vs David Wallace American winI played this as the German. Looks very interesting on the scenario card, but I did not like it that much during actual play.
There seems to be no "good" approach for the Germans: The going through the western woods will be inevitably slow as it can be delayed by the US with little investment. The level 1 hills will (very likely) be covered by the OBA observer and MG-fire that the German would need to successfully suppress before advancing along that route. That means some of the German TDs won't be moving for a while. The "central" ground level plain is nasty terrain to attack across. Finally, an eastern flanking move around the hills might work out but it is not getting you anywhere since the village you need to capture is in the west. Furthermore, the German cannot afford to lose many of his valuable units (i.e. half-tracks and TDs) as he has to bear in mind the stiff requirement of 70 EVP besides the control of the village. The German infantry lacks long range hitting power and good leadership to try to duel it out with its American counterpart. The Flamm-Hetzer is a key unit against the US infantry (which I lost before it fired a shot to AT Mines...).
After playing this once, I have some idea how to do things better but still I would not say I have grokked the scenario from the German viewpoint. I agree with ROAR statistics (currently US 66 / German 49) that it is a pro US affair.

2012-01-02(A) Vic Lauterbach vs MA German (SS) winPlayed before back when AP#1 came out and won with US. Playing Germans was much tougher and it was super close - had just 6 exit VP and 4 buildings at end of GT 6.
