Overview:

During Operation Market Garden, the 7th Somersets, the lead battalion of the 214th Brigade was to push through Oosterhaut and link up with Polish paratroopers at Driel. Traffic chaos in the city resulted in a planned pre-dawn attack being delayed. Nevertheless, the link-up could not be delayed, for the British across the Rhine were in desperate straits by then. In full light the Germans, bolstered during the night with a headquarters infantry battalion and a company of Panthers, were prepared to give them a bloody time of it.

2023-03-05(D) Ron Garcia vs Darryl M. German winNot a very exciting scenario for the Germans. The Germans have a very static and small force which basically needs to be split between the two bridge crossing points. As the Germans, I set the Panther up in P8 to dissuade my opponent from making a quick rush for that bridge. To keep me guessing on his intent, my opponent sent about two equal stacks down the board edges and advanced the rest through the middle. That held my Panther in place for a couple of turns. With his slow progress on the eastern side and a major push for the western bridge, I moved the Panther to interdict the attempt on that side. A couple of turns later the west was secured so my opponent shifted towards the eastern side. Back went the Panther. A few squads finally manged to cross that bridge by turn five. A few forded the deep stream hex a turn or two earlier to the east but were broken rather easily when they pushed forward earlier in the game. By then I had pulled back to building l9 and broke the three and half squads who had made it. By mid turn 7 the writing was on the wall and my friend threw in the towel.

Having a couple of squads on the 2nd floor of building H4 I think is a must for the Germans. From there, they can interdict a lot of area. A slow pullback from building P8 should also keep the eastern approach secure. As long as the Germans keep the Panther mobile and out of a three hex range of the PIATs (not very hard to do), I feel the British will have a tough go of this one.
