Overview:

After two months of heavy fighting in and around Shanghai, the Chinese Army was forced to retreat to the south bank of Suzhou Creek. Covering the retreat was the 524th Regiment of the Chinese 88th Division led by Lt.-Col. Hsieh Chin-yuan. The regiment held its positions around the Four-Bank Warehouse -- a reinforced-concrete warehouse owned by four commercial banks. In the middle of the burning Zhabei district, soldiers of the 524th prepared to write their own heroic destiny as thy faced the advancing Japanese Shanghai Expeditionary Army.

2024-09-19(D) Johan Vrijdaghs vs Guerra Guido Japanese win
2024-05-21(D) George Tashji vs Chinese winChinese fire was deadly accurate while the Japanese troops advanced. By end of turn 2, six Japanese squads had been eliminated (!) while several others reduced to striped status. Blaze counters split the Japanese advance to both flanks, but they persisted - and by turn 5 were in place to begin fire on the factory. Meanwhile, the Chinese played a typical fall-back game, skulking to slow the Japanese as they drew back towards the factory. The Chinese lost all their MG's through malfunction or in CC, but they firmly defended the factory with multiple intact squads. By turn 7, the Japanese did not have enough troops left to storm the factory, let alone take control. Good scenario - the spreading blaze counters make things unpredictable.
2024-01-04(A) Robert Wiebe vs Dave Chinese winDice were against me from the start, when my HMG on overwatch broke on its first shot, then was gone permanently the next RPh. Besides that, my assault up the right flank was pretty well on track as by turns 3/4 I was shooting into the Factory building; even got off two Banzai charges. Unfortunately, despite firing 12FP (after being halved) +2/+3/+4 shots I was not able to keep Dave's Chinese broken or pinned. Eventually ran out of time. Good use of skulking kept many Chinese units alive when they could have easily been chopped up.

Over all a very fun scenario, our first playing PTO, and we had a blast.
2023-10-26(D) Dwayne Duval vs Kevin DuvalA Japanese win
2023-07-05(D) Jobbo Fett vs JobboFett Chinese winSurprisingly close after some good and bad luck for the Japanese force, especially a banzai charge half-way through the game that got mulched by the valiant chinese defenders. Multiple GUSTS allowed for Blazes to thrive, and collapse a few locations, though the Blazes were poorly placed to begin with. By the end of the Game, through very fast play and poor choices, the Japanese managed entry into the Factory despite the chances, but ultimately the final Fortified Location made it impossible for the Japanese forces to enter. I think the Japanese should get the balance, especially seeing the records on the right.
2022-10-14(D) David Ramsey vs Marc Blume Chinese winThis one is tough if the Chinese get back, in numbers, concealed in the factory.

It’s a nice scenario but the Japanese must have a very focused attack.
2020-08-16(A) wayne baumber vs Joel Chinese winToo tough for the Japanese IMO without the balance.
2020-01-22(A) Paul Schorfheide vs Rich Trippeer Chinese winEnded up surrounding all 3 fortified locations but just couldn't get in there.
2019-06-08(A) Shane Pask vs Chinese winChinese filled the factory with most of their squads. I found out that a couple of MG nests were outside as my two top leaders failed 1MC in different attacks and died on turn 2. Almost ready to admit defeat while still outside the factory on turn 5 but once inside luck changed and the Chinese withered. Japanese won 2/3 CC on last turn but the lost one gave Chinese the victory.
2018-12-26(A) Martí Cabré vs Txema Mainez Chinese winDuplicate of 145.
2018-10-28(D) Doug McMullen vs Steve Steinmetz Chinese winA great scenario. The perfect first PTO scenario to try out the Japanese. All infantry and no jungle terrain -- but so interesting you don't mind the lack of toys.

A few notes:

1. The scenario seems to play with a slight Chinese edge. The scenario-suggested balance to help the Japanese is awful IMO (I've played this three times now) It's much too heavy and ruins the scenario. Instead, in this latest playing I took the Chinese but for balance I took no OB granted dummies. A light balance. Steve's Japanese had the game won but couldn't roll a 10 or less on the final CC -- and I squeaked out a victory. That seems pretty balanced!

2. Chinese player should note that Kindling is NOT NA. Creative kindling should be a part of the defender's arsenal (*arson*al?)

3. As a first PTO this is often played by newer players -- if that applies to you, be sure to review the rule book for the Factory rules -- these are easy to overlook but are crucial to the scenario being played correctly.
2017-12-26(A) Christian Knudsen vs Mark Sockwell Chinese winA super-fun scenario that I highly recommend to anybody. Mark pulled it off by absolutely refusing to break a squad in one of the fortified locations, even after being encircled. Even so it came down to the last CC, which I couldn't pull off. What a blast!
2017-09-05(A) JP Laurio vs Ron Chinese win
2017-07-04(A) David Garvin vs Jim Thompson Chinese winI'm attacking as Japanese. First, after failing to pass even NMCs during my initial rush, striping a bunch of guys, but carrying on due to the massive firepower coming up, I blast away. A 2 MC on 2 of his defending elite squads! This is it! I'm going to crack his wall and pour through. Heck, I even have his rout paths blocked! They will have to run upstairs and get upper level surrounded!
Wait! A roll! "4". He passes! That's ok, I he hit my SAN. Next roll. "2". OK, hold on, first my SAN. Oh, look, on a dr I get higher than either of his DR. So, let's see the HOB roll:
"3". Hero.
Towel, I toss you in.
Games like this one are infuriating. But, as always, there are those that keep bringing you back.
I'll be back

2014-04-26(A) Dan Best vs Dave Mareske Chinese win
2012-07-10(A) Christopher Dawson vs Chinese Chinese winHard fought battle. My Japanese got into the factory on the 4th turn but just couldn't reduce the last fortified hex enough to enter it and gain control. Fires burned up huge sections of the town! Fun scenario.

2003-10-08(A) Vic Lauterbach vs Probably MA Chinese winFrom ASLAP notes - no DCs make this one very tough for the attacker. Japanese were unbeatable in CC and HtH CC, but could not take the last fortified location.
