Overview:

While the Marines were experiencing the horror of Tarawa, the Army's 27th Division, a New York National Guard outfit, was facing a considerably smaller Japanese force on Makin Atoll. Previously, the 27th Division had been garrisoning Hawaii and its combat inexperience would become apparent. On the first day, they overreacted to every sniper threat, slowing the progress of their advance. On the morning of D+2, the 3rd Battalion Landing Team launched an assault on the last major stronghold, a cluster of stone buildings around a crossroad, which were built during the British colonial occupation.
Attacker: American (3rd Battalion Landing Team, 27th Division and 193rd Tank Battalion)
Defender: Japanese (6th Special Naval Landing Force and 802nd and 952nd Air Units)

2022-09-20(A) Andy Bagley vs Mike Grogan Japanese winClose and very enjoyable game. My plan was to clear the northern board first then sweep south to take the huts, hopefully inflicting lots of Japanese casualties on the way. The Japanese however put up stiff resistance without committing all of their forces, which slowed me down, and I felt I couldn't push harder because of the CVP cap. By the penultimate turn I had to gamble with a CC attack against the Japanese 10-1 leader and elite squad; I lost the ambush dr and got wiped out.
My opponent played this very well. Some of the Japanese troops stayed on the southern board and never saw action, but by keeping these forces intact and denying me the huts there, it is hard for the Americans to gain the required 40VPs. By the end of my 6th turn I had just 26 VPs (16 for buildings, 10 for CVPs) with no chance of reaching my goal on the last turn, so I conceded.
2022-07-06(A) wayne baumber vs Graham Japanese win
2022-06-02(D) Simon Staniforth vs American winAmericans just got the needed VP in the last MPh. Japanese needed to kill an AFV to swing the game, had a few low odds chances in CC but no dice.
2020-11-14(D) Vic Lauterbach vs JM American winNice close game. The Bobai pits were a non factor. I needed to kill one M3 Lee in CC to hit the CVP cap and couldn't do it despite getting several chances!

2013-11-03(D) Andy Beaton vs Richard Hooks Japanese winJapanese were getting crushed until one key five minute stretch where my 10-1 and crew ambushed and killed two US squads, then took their bazooka and killed a Grant tank for enough CVP to win. One for the history books.
2012-08-27(A) X von Marwitz vs Alex Koestler Japanese win
2011-05-21(A) Jeff Waldon vs Frank Tozier American winFtF CAG-Makin was again Taken, decent scenario, I played a conservative game as the US to minimize losses, it worked well, I has my 40VP's by the bottom of Turn 6 and only lost a HS.
