As the Allied beachhead in Sicily expanded, the impatient General George Patton demanded better facilities for supplying his troops. Under orders not to launch an offensive, Patton hit upon the subterfuge of calling his advance a “reconnaissance in force”. Pushing up from Gela, the job of seizing the docks at Porto Empedocle fell to the 3rd Ranger Battalion. . .

Don N. and I played the Americans and barely managed to gain control of 1/2 buildings and have enough casualty VP to get the win. The Italians were felled like cordwood, but the Germans held tough.

Totally botched the VC...read the 3:1 CVP limit clause but didn't really grasp its implications. Put a few Italian HS's out front and were killed or captured and very quickly was looking at a 6:0 CVP hole. Americans dug in and didn't threaten either VC building, so the Germans tried a bit of local counter-attacking but only added to the CVP deficit. Conceded early.

My dice failed me against Paul's good rolls. I wish I could have given a better game. It looks fairly balanced, but when you average "8s" and roll 9 "12s" in some key spots, it did not make for a good game. Paul had a couple well placed HIP units that interrupted my attack. Called it after turn 4 as I would probably take the Italian building, but had no force left to take the German one.

Great scenario with exciting finish. US had 20 VP to Axis 4, but the Italians held out in Y4 with three unbroken squads, and the German 9-1 won CC in J4 against a fanatic US HS to seal the win!

Fantastic scenario with Jeff holding out as the Axis on one building (Italian Stronghold) and preventing the Americans from a CVP victory. Great time and opponent!

I felt my only chance to hold off the onslaught of Americans was to get some fires going to try and limit their across-the-street options in attacking the strongholds. It didn't seem like they had much effect at first, but as the game went on it did seem to be more and more of a good idea, especially when gusts kicked in and made it interesting. Jason had the right idea in trying to take as many prisoners as possible. The Germans played into his hands, but the Italians were exceptionally resilient in this one. One particular half squad probably saved the game at the end by dispatching an opposing half squad in CC and blocking one of the entry hexes into the building. On the last turn the German building fell, but the Italians managed to cling to theirs and just remain under the CVP cap. Great scenario!

Tons of elite Americans with not many leaders and comparably few SW vs. mainly Italians and some Germans holed up in stone buildings. Setup for the attacker is from offboard and is somewhat split into two forces each entering on turn 1. The defenders see Italians one one flank, the Germans on the other with a small Italian screen in front as per the setup instructions. The two victory buildings are large and each very well to defend with safe places to rout where it is nearly impossible to be fired upon. The Italians will be hauted by their ELR of 1. They want that war to be over... As it is possible to win this one by capturing only 1 of the buildings if the US gains more than 3x the CVP than they lose, they should obviously capture everbody they can. There seems to be plenty of opportunity to do so. The Italians can't do much vs. the US and their incredible firepower while they are very brittle themselves. So basically, it is skulking and delaying for the Axis for the entire game. The only opportunity the Italians can watch out for is when the US needs to cross one of the many streets. I played the US in this one. In our game, the forward Italian screen got captured almost entirely. In mid-game, the Axis managed to slow me down because my important high fire-power groups just could not seem to do anything except wasting ammo. My play with the 4x 60mm MTR could have been better. Eventually, however, I managed to capture the victory building on the Italian flank while the Germans on their flank managed to keep me out of theirs. CVP totals inflicted were 51 by the US (25 normal and 26 for captured personnel with the double value included in this number). Axis inflicted 5 CVP. So the US won. This pretty much tells the story on how the scenario plays out. Probably more fun to play for the Attacker, but I do have the impression, that the scenario is indeed very balanced.

We both had a lot of fun with this one. I had some good rolls during the mid game that kept him about 1 turn behind from taking the italian held bldg. He also stumbled into a German HIP mmg that held off the US on that side. Good scenario!
